Why we hate each other on the internet? (by Kurzgesagt)

Last week, the popular YouTube science channel Kurzgesagt uploaded a video titled "The Internet is Worse Than Ever – Now What?", talking about how divisions in opinions on the Internet have become bigger and scarier.

The Internet is Worse Than Ever – Now What?

Kurzgesagt (word meaning "in a nutshell" in German) is a science channel that creates content based on many research topics including physics, biology, psychology, politics, etc. Kurzgesagt has 9 different YouTube channels where the same videos are published with different language narration. The biggest one, with English narration, has 21.5 million subscribers.

Kurzgesagt is a very well-respected channel in the YouTube science community. This is not only due to its clean animations and impactful narration but also because they do very intense research for every video while being extremely transparent about where they gathered the information. Under every video's description section, they provide the sources and further reading material they have gone through for that video.

How to Make a Kurzgesagt Video in 1200 Hours

Back to our main video, the first point out how divisions of political views among people in countries is expected to cause massive harm such as a civil war or political violence being seen as justified. They mentioned that while this is extreme in the US, the people living in other countries also started to see themselves as part of opposing teams more and more.

They also mention how the places where the people are the most ideologically isolated, called social bubbles, are their real-life surroundings rather than social media, which was not the case people thought previously.

They go on to mention how human brains have evolved to cooperate with the people in their community even if they do not like each other. However, after the acceptance of social media, this point of view got a big hit because we started seeing people by only their opposing views, which is polarizing. They then explain how it would get reinforced more as we see people from opposing sides more.

In the end, they advise social media users to go hang out in smaller communities to relax from the polarizing effect of social media. They also mention some applications that can help people reach news and resources in a way that eliminates bias.

This week's blog was a lot of fun for me to write, I hope you liked it.

Thanks for reading!
